Paintings

The figurative painting of Ulrich Wilhelm Röpke impresses the viewer with the dominating presence of the picture figures: They seem unavoidable and emerge from strong-coloured colour bulges, thrown on the canvas and dispersed by the artist. These figures are similar to phenomena which can escape from the pictorial composition and come out to leave the picture. They are held back by an inherent porosity sticking to the picture figures and contradictory transparency of the painting which they hold on in the picture space. The figures show an odd quality of being immaterial in spite of a wrapping up colour coat.

The refreshing independence of Röpkes paintings brings up hope that still not all pictures have been painted. With relish he creates at nearly every place in his pictures breaks, creates fresh starts, remains, besides, contradictory playful and, nevertheless, deeply impressive. In spite of all breaks, at the end the pictures always show an united composition, leaving behind the viewer with the question where this painting is to be settled.
